Born: Jun 26, 1952
Birthplace: Asbestos, QC, Canada

Drafted: STL / 1972 NHL Amateur Draft
Round: 3rd (41st overall)
St. Louis drafted Jean Hamel in 1972, and he divided the next two seasons between the Blues and the Denver spurs of the WHL. He was traded to Detroit in February 1974 along with Chris Evans and Bryan Watson for Ted Harris, Bill Collins, and Garnet Bailey.

With the exception of a minor detour into the CHL during the 1977-78 season, Hamel played with the wings from 1974 until 1981. After being released by the Red Wings, he signed as a free agent with the Quebec Nordiques. After a year, the Nordiques stated that they were pleased with his hard work and attitude and renewed his contract for another two years.

He played 51 games for Quebec in 1982-83 and was claimed by Montreal in the waiver draft in October 1983. He played a full season for the Canadiens and was set for a repeat performance the following season. However, he took a puck to the eye during a pre-season game against the Boston Bruins, impairing his vision and forcing him to retire. He moved into coaching for the Montreal organization in the AHL.
