Howie Mackie was a versatile player who could line up at right wing or defense. He played a few games for the Detroit Red Wings in the late 30s but was best known for a lengthy career in the AHL.

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Mackie played senior hockey for the local Greenshirts and the Hamilton Tigers. In 1936 he led the OHA senior league with 24 goals in 22 games for Hamilton. During the 1936-37 season he dressed for 13 games in Detroit then played the rest of the season with the AHL's Pittsburgh Hornets. Mackie saw most of his ice time in Pittsburgh the next season but was also recalled to Motown for seven games.

The industrious worker spent eight years in the AHL before calling it a career in 1946. Along the way he hit double figures in goals four times and helped the Hershey Bears reach the 1941 Calder Cup finals where they succumbed to the Cleveland Barons.
