Clare Martin jumped straight from the Junior A Guelph Biltmores to the NHL with the Boston Bruins, playing 13 games in 1941-42. During the war, Martin was in the military, but returned to the Bruins for six games in 1946-47.

Although he spent the majority of the '46-47 season with the Bruins' AHL farm team in Hershey, Martin was back with Boston for the full season in 1947-48. But again, he was sent to Hershey where he played the full 1948-49 season with the Bears.

Martin was traded to Detroit with Pete Babando, Lloyd Durham and Jimmy Peters for Pete Horeck and Bill Quackenbush during the summer of 1949 and won a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings that season. After two seasons in Detroit, Martin was dispatched to the Black Hawks with George Gee, Jimmy McFadden, Max McNab, Jimmy Peters, and Herb Raglan in what amounted to a an opportunity to shore up the lowly Chicago franchise.

But Martin played just 31 games with Chicago before being sold to the New York Rangers at Christmastime 1951. He played 14 games with the Rangers, then was sent to the Cincinnati Mohawks of the AHL. Martin played three seasons of senior hockey with his hometown Kitchener Dutchmen before retiring in 1955.
