Joe Matte
Joe Matte
Number: 9
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 178
Shoots: Right
Born: Mar 15, 1909
Birthplace: Bourget, ON, Canada
Acquired: Signed as a free agent by Detroit on September 12, 1929.
Forward Joe Matte played 24 games in the NHL, 12 with the Detroit Cougars in 1929-30 and 12 with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1942-43 season when many of the league's regulars were unavailable due to commitments during World War II.

Matte played hockey at an elite level for close to 20 years, with most of his early years being spent in the IHL with the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Yellowjackets and the Niagara Falls Cataracts of the OPHL. In 1933-34, Matte moved to St. Louis where he earned a regular roster spot with the AHA's Flyers for seven years.

From 1940 to 1942 Matte played with the Kansas City Americans of the AHA before heading back east to Cleveland where he signed with the Barons for the 1942-43 season. It was during that year that he got his one and only opportunity to lace up the blades in the NHL, when the Blackhawks inserted him into the lineup for 12 games. He retired after being told he would not be staying with the club and would have to return to the minors in Cleveland.

Matte attempted a brief, 18-game comeback five years later, playing for the IHL's Akron Americans in 1948-49.
