Doug McCaig was a reliable stay-at-home defenceman in the 1940s and '50s. He was capable of clearing the puck from the zone and playing the body without drawing an inordinate number of penalties.

Born in Guelph, Ontario, McCaig first made a name for himself in the old Michigan-Ontario League with Detroit Holzbaugh. In 1941-42, he toiled with the AHL's Indianapolis Capitals where he was a second team all-star and played nine games for the Detroit Red Wings. During World War II, he suited up for the RCAF teams in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Summerside, P.E.I.

After playing most of the 1945-46 season in the minors, McCaig played a regular shift with the Red Wings the next year. In October 1948, the solid rearguard was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks where he remained for nearly three full seasons. McCaig spent his last five years in the minors where he was chosen to the IHL's second all-star team twice as a member of the Toledo Mercurys. He retired as a player in 1956 after spending a year with the Fort Wayne Komets of the "I" then stepped behind the bench of the club the next season.
