Rick McCann was a slick playmaking center who filled a part time role with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1960s and '70s. Most of his success came in the minors and the international scene.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, McCann played Junior B with the St. Mary's Lincolns before spending the 1964-65 season with the Michigan Tech Huskies. The young pivot then spent time with the Canadian national team and took part in the 1966 World Championships.

McCann made his pro debut with the CHL's Memphis Wings and spent the next five years as a Detroit farmhand. He attained his greatest success with the Fort Worth Wings of the CHL where he recorded two straight 20-goal seasons. In 1973, McCann left for Great Britain to play for the London Lions where he notched 80 points in 70 games. He returned to North America the next season where he played briefly for Detroit and was a key playmaker for the AHL's Virginia Wings. He retired in 1976 after playing a year with the New Haven Nighthawks.
