Born in Red Deer, Alberta, Hicks was taken 28th overall by the Wings in 1978 after he accumulated 94 goals in three seasons with the WCJHL's Flin Flon Bombers. After making his pro debut with the Winnipeg Jets during the last season of the WHA in 1978-79, the young forward joined Detroit the following season.
Hicks formed a decent utility line with George Lyle and Bill Hogaboam in 1979-80. The next year he notched 15 points and saw more ice time with linemates Vaclav Nedomansky and Brent Peterson. He was unable to keep his place in the line-up and was dispatched to the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL late in the season. He continued to toil in the minors and joined EHC Kloten of Switzerland briefly before retiring in 1986.
