Following his Senior year at Michigan Tech, McLeod signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings in the fall of 1971. In his first year as a professional, the Medicine Hat native split his time with the CHL's Fort Worth Wings and the IHL's Port Huron Wings. In 1972-73, McLeod was a member of the AHL's Virginia Wings, and went to play parts of two seasons in Virginia while seeing his only NHL action with Detroit during the 1973-74 season. In 26 games with Detroit, McLeod registered four points (2-2-4) with 24 PIM.
After three years in the Detroit system, McLeod signed as a free agent with the WHA's Phoenix Roadrunners in the summer of 1974. He went on to play parts of three seasons in Phoenix before he was traded to the Houston Aeros early into the 1976-77 WHA season. McLeod retired from the game of hockey following the 1978-79 WHA season, as a member of the Indianapolis Ice where he was a teammate of Wayne Gretzky.
