Center Brian Murphy is one of the many members of the NHL's One Game Wonder's Club, having suited up for his one and only contest as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1974-75 season.

Murphy played Junior B hockey with the Markham Waxers before moving up to the Toronto Marlboros and then the London Knights in Junior A. Although he had a relatively successful junior career, he was not able to impress NHL scouts enough to draft him. Murphy decided to return to London as an overage player in 1967-68 where he had the best year of his junior career. If nothing else, it opened the door of opportunity with several minor-league teams taking notice of his game.

In 1968-69 he turned pro with the AHL's Springfield Kings where he was a regular performer over the following three years. In 1974-75 he received a call from the Red Wings, who had recently obtained his playing rights. It was just a one-game call-up as an injury replacement but it was nonetheless the highlight of Murphy's playing career.

Murphy finished his competitive days as a member of the Lancaster Lancers of the OHA Senior League in 1977-78.
