Defenseman Jim Nahrgang spent some time on the Detroit Red Wings' blueline in the late 1970s. He was best at staying in position and making crisp outlet passes to his forwards. Most of his success as a player came at the college and minor pro level.

Born in Millbank, Ontario, Nahrgang played three years in the OHA, two with the Ottawa 67's and one with the Kitchener Rangers. He then moved on to excel at Michigan Tech University for four seasons. Following a solid freshman year in 1970-71, he was chosen 86th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL amateur draft. Nahrgang provided a physical presence in his own end and jumped into the play to register 105 career points. He was named to the WCHA second all-star team in 1973 and the first team the next season. He was also named to the NCAA championship all-star squad after the Huskies nearly won the national title in 1974.

Nahrgang spent the majority of his first two years as a pro with the AHL's Virginia Wings but was called up twice by Detroit. In 1976-77 he played 53 games and seemed to be fitting in well on the improving Red Wings. As it turned out, Detroit was interested in giving some other defensemen a chance to play and Nahrgang was assigned to the minors. After playing the 1977-78 season with the Kansas City Red Wings of the CHL and the AHL's Philadelphia Firebirds, the veteran blueliner retired.
