Acquired: Signed as a free agent by Detroit on September 12, 1929.
Comfortable at both center and left wing, John Newman suited up briefly with the NHL's Detroit Falcons in 1930-31. He was a responsible checker who could score the occasional goal and spent most of his career in the IAHL and the Michigan-Ontario League (MOHL).

The native of Ottawa, Ontario, played junior with the local Shamrocks in 1928-29. The next year he turned pro with the Detroit Olympics and remained with the team for four solid years apart from his brief appearance in the NHL. Prior to the 1933-34 season, Newman was traded to the Buffalo Bisons. After spending a year in the PCHL with the Seattle Seahawks in 1936-37, he joined the Detroit Pontiacs of the MOHL before retiring in 1940.
