The native of Detroit, Michigan, played junior in Quebec with the St. Jerome Alouettes then played a few games with the OHA's Hamilton Red Wings in 1965-66. He was the property of his hometown Wings but spent four years in the minors before spending 24 games with the parent club in 1970-71. After only getting into five contests the next season, Niekamp left for the WHA. The hard-nosed blueliner played two seasons with the Los Angeles Sharks then four with the Phoenix Roadrunners before retiring in 1978.
