Defenseman Jim Niekamp played 29 games for the Detroit Red Wings in the early 70s. He played a rugged style that resulted in more than his share of penalty minutes but he was also capable of moving the puck up to his forwards with consistency.

The native of Detroit, Michigan, played junior in Quebec with the St. Jerome Alouettes then played a few games with the OHA's Hamilton Red Wings in 1965-66. He was the property of his hometown Wings but spent four years in the minors before spending 24 games with the parent club in 1970-71. After only getting into five contests the next season, Niekamp left for the WHA. The hard-nosed blueliner played two seasons with the Los Angeles Sharks then four with the Phoenix Roadrunners before retiring in 1978.
