Butch Paul was born September 11, 1943 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. A member of the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Canadian Amateur Hockey League, Paul was a Memorial Cup winner in 1963 and a two-time finalist in 1962 and again in 1964.

A CAHL First Team All-Star in 1964, Paul played one game with the Central Professional Hockey League's Cincinnati Wings during the 1963-64 season before making his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings in 1964-65.

Although the majority of his season was split between the Eastern Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers and the American Hockey League's Pittsburgh Hornets, Butch played three games with the Red Wings before returning to the Cincinnati Wings in 1965-66.

The 1965-66 season turned out to be Butch Paul's last, as on March 25,1966, he died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident, he was 22-years-old.
