The Dauphin, Manitoba native played with the local Kings in the MJHL before spending a season in the WCJHL with the Winnipeg Jets. He adjusted well to the top junior league where he was a 20-goal scorer and solid checker. Korney was drafted that year 59th overall by the Detroit Red Wings.
During his first three years as a pro, Korney logged plenty of mileage. He played 59 games in the NHL with the Wings over that span but also toiled in the AHL, IHL, CHL, the old Southern League, and in Britain with the London Lions.
He settled into a career as a minor leaguer but did play briefly for the New York Rangers in 1978-79 after he was picked up on waivers. Korney spent one last year with the AHL's Syracuse Firebirds in 1979-80 then coached the Cranbrook Royals of the WHL for a season before stepping away from the game.
