Born in Steinbach, Manitoba, Krentz played three years at Michigan State from 1982 to 1985. In June 1985 he was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings. He was sent to the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings for the 1985-86 season where he enjoyed a solid year with 46 points. Krentz became a valuable member of the AHL club while spending brief periods with Detroit.

In 1987-88 he scored 82 points and was placed on the AHL second all-star team. Feeling that he needed a change of scenery, Krentz left for Germany where he played five years with the Alder Mannheim club and one last year with the Rosenheim Star Bulls before retiring in 1996.
