Bernie Ruelle was born November 23, 1920 in Houghton, Michigan. A member of the Michigan-Ontario Hockey League for three years, Ruelle spent time with the Detroit Pontiacs, Detroit Holzbaugh and Toledo-Detroit before stepping away from the game for the entire 1942-43 season.

Ruelle returned to the game in 1943-44, and made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings. In two games with the Wings, Ruelle scored his first and only NHL goal, before joining the American Hockey League's Indianapolis Capitols.

Due to his Military Service, Bernie Ruelle did not play during the 1944-45 season or the 1945-46 season, returning only to the game in 1946-47 with Tacoma-Fresno of the Pacific Coast Hockey League.

In brief playing career, Bernie Ruelle played in two NHL games, scoring one goal.
