Acquired: Signed as a free agent by Detroit on October 13, 1939.
Defenseman Bob Whitelaw was born in Scotland, but moved to Canada and discovered the game of hockey. After playing his Junior hockey in Winnipeg, Whitelaw spent two seasons in Britain playing professionally before returning to North America to join the American Hockey League. After his first season in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets Whitelaw signed a deal with the Detroit Red Wings. The next year again he was soley in the minors but during the 1940-41 campaign the Red Wings gave him his shot.

Whitelaw suited up for 23 contests for Detroit and was able to register two assists. That season he also played his only NHL playoff games when he was held scoreless in eight post-season matches. The next year Whitelaw returned to Motown for nine more games.

That rest of that season and all o the next one he spent back in the AHL. Whitelaw's career was interrupted for a year when he left the game to fulfill his military obligations.

Whitelaw returned to the ice for 11 games in the 1944-45 season playing Senior hockey for the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg. He then returned to Britain to play the following season then landed back in the AHL in 1946. His final season was spent playing Senior back in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he had begun his career.
