In 1972-73 he signed with the Charlotte Checkers of the EHL and in 65 games he had 23 points. In a second season with the Checkers he increased his points total to 43 points in 66 games.
The Winnipeg Jets of the WHA signed Miller to a free-agent contract in September 1974. He dressed for 67 games with the Jets that year, scoring nine goals and 28 points. Midway through the 1975-76 season he was traded to the Minnesota Fighting Saints for Gerry Odrowski in January, 1976. He briefly returned to Winnipeg as a free agent when the Fighting Saints folded in March, 1976.
In 1977-78 Miller decided to take up an offer from the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, signing a free agent contract on July 8. He took a regular shift on the Red Wings' defense, playing in 62 and 75 games over the next two years, respectively. In 1979-80 Miller played 16 games in Detroit with the balance of his year being played in Adirondack. He returned for one more season with Detroit in 1980-81, playing in 64 games and retired as a member of the Adirondack Red Wings after the 1981-82 season.
Miller played 217 NHL games, all with the Red Wings, scoring ten goals and 61 points.
