Acquired: Traded to Detroit by Hartford with Brian Glynn for Paul Coffey, Keith Primeau and Detroit's 1st round choice (Nikos Tselios) in 1997 Entry Draft on October 9, 1996.
Drafted: NJD / 1987 NHL Entry Draft
Round: 1st (2nd overall)

Selected by the Devils with the second overall pick at the 1987 NHL entry draft following a standout major junior career with the London Knights, Shanahan was an elite goal scorer throughout a lengthy professional career that included stops in New Jersey, St. Louis, Hartford, New York (Rangers) and Detroit. Acquired by the Red Wings a few days into the 1996-97 campaign, Shanahan made an immediate impact upon his arrival in Hockeytown, netting 46 goals in 79 games played that season prior to helping Detroit end a 42-year Stanley Cup draught that spring. Shanahan was also a big part of the Red Wings’ championship runs in 1998 and 2002 and recorded 633 points (309G-324A) during his 716 games played for Detroit, placing him amongst the top 10 scorers in franchise history. Upon retiring at the end of the 2008-09 season, Shanahan ranked 11th all-time in NHL history with 656 career goals and fifth in power-play markers with 237. The Mimico, Ontario, native also competed for Team Canada at several international events, including the 1987 IIHF World Junior Championships, the 1991 Canada Cup, the 1994 and 2006 IIHF World Championships, the 1996 World Cup and both the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
