After three seasons with the OHA's Ottawa 67's from 1971-1974 Derek Smith was selected by the Sabres in the '74 Amateur Draft. After two seasons in the AHL, he made his NHL debut in the 1975-76 playoffs appearing in one game. He spent the majority of the next season with the Hershey Bears before playing solely with the Sabres in the 1978-79 season.
Smith's most productive season came in 1980-81 when he collected career highs in points and assists. He was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 1981 where he played two seasons. Smith finished his career in 1984 playing in the AHL with the Adirondack Red Wings.
