Number: 29
Height: 6' 3"
Weight: 200
Shoots: Left
Born: Mar 11, 1967
Birthplace: Rogachev, Russia
Acquired: Traded to Detroit by Winnipeg with Bob Essensa for Tim Cheveldae and Dallas Drake on March 8, 1994.
Drafted: WIN / 1992 NHL Entry Draft
Round: 1st (17th overall)
Sergei Bautin left a promising career in the NHL to return to Europe. The veteran of two world championships and the 1992 Olympics with the Russian national team was Winnipeg's first pick in the 1992 entry draft, 17th overall.

After two seasons with the Jets, he was traded with Bob Essensa to the Detroit Red Wings for Tim Cheveldae and Dallas Drake. He never found a regular place in the Wings roster and after a brief stopover in San Jose -- a single game after signing as a free agent -- Bautin signed on with Lulea in Sweden in 1996.

He led the Swedish league in penalty minutes in his first year, averaging almost five minutes in the box per game as the after-effects of the North American game worked their way out of his system. In the ensuing years he also played in leagues in Russia and Germany and played on the fifth place Russian national team at the 1999 World Championships.
