Born in Novosibirsk, USSR, Golubovsky played with Dynamo Moscow's second team and the IHL's Russian Penguins. He was chosen 23rd overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 1994 then spent three full years developing in the AHL with Adirondack. The young blueliner then spent three years going between Motown and Adirondack before he was traded to the Florida Panthers for Igor Larianov. In 2000-01, Golubovsky played six NHL games but toiled chiefly in the minors as his suitability for full time big league work was questioned.
