The Calgary native was chosen 58th overall by Detroit in 1995 after a fine rookie season with the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors. He returned to junior and accumulated 70 goals his last two years before joining the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL in 1997-98. Over the next four years Laplante was a solid checker in the minors and was recalled on occsion by Detroit. He played 30 games for the club in 1999-2000 but they were very deep at center.
In June 2000, Laplante was claimed by the Minnesota Wild in the expansion draft. He didn't make the team out of training camp but enjoyed a solid year with the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL while hoping to get another crack at the NHL.
