The 15th choice, 248th overall selection of the Nashville Predators in the 1998 NHL entry draft, Darren Haydar is a former member of the Milton Merchants and a graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

The Toronto, Ontario, native spent four seasons at New Hampshire where he was an offensive force leading his team in scoring three out of his four years and ending his collegiate career with 102 goals and 219 points. Haydar earned second team Hockey East honors and was named to the Hockey East all-rookie team in his freshman year before earning second team Hockey East honors once again the following year as well as being named to the New England Division I All-Star team.

In his senior year with the UNH, Haydar was named an NCAA first team All-American and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award after leading the nation in scoring with 76 points. The Hockey East Player of the Year, Hockey East All-Tournament MVP, Hockey East All-Conference first team member and the Hockey East All-Tournament team member, Haydar ended his career at UNH ranked second all-time in goals (102) and third all-time in points (219).

The 2002-03 season marked Haydars first as professional and marked his NHL debut with the Predators. Even though he saw his first NHL action, Haydar spent the majority of his first professional season with the team's AHL affiliate in Milwaukee registering 75 points in 75 games.

Haydar would continue to hone his skills in the AHL with Milwaukee and became one of the leagues bright young stars. In 2005-06, Haydar tallied 92 points before he was signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Thrashers in the summer of 2006.
