Following two season in the WHL with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Kopecky joined the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
On July 1, 2009, Kopecky signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks, earning $1.2 million per season. He played in 74 games for the Blackhawks in his first year with the team, posting 21 points.
The 2009-10 season would end triumphantly for Kopecky and the Blackhawks when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to capture the club's first Stanley Cup championship since 1961.
On June 27, 2011, Kopecky's time in Chicago would come to an end. He was traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a seventh round draft pick.
