Dmitri Bykov was born May 5, 1977 in Kazan, Russia. The eighth-round pick, 258th overall selection of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2001 NHL entry draft, Bykov came to the NHL in 2002-03 after spending the earlier part of his career in Russia.

In his first season in the NHL, the young defenceman saw action in 71 games tallying 12 points before opting to return to his club team in the Russian Elite League in 2003-04.

On the international stage, Bykov has gone on to represent his homeland at three World Championships (1999, 2002 and 2004).
