Jan Mursak was born January 20, 1988 Maribor, Slovenia. A standout in his homeland and in the Czech junior league, Mursak was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Mursak made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2008. He would spend the better part of three seasons in the AHL before getting his first taste of NHL action. Mursak made his NHL debut on December 28, 2010 against the Colorado Avalanche. In doing so he became just the second Slovenian-born player in NHL history.
