Brendan Smith was born on February 8, 1989 in Toronto, Ontario. A product of both the GTHL and OPJHL, Smith was selected in the first round of the 2007 NHL draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He would go on to attend the University of Wisconsin for three years and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2010.
Smith made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Red Wings' affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, during the 2010-11 season. In 63 games for the club the defenceman would record 32 points.
Smith would get his first taste of NHL action during the 2011-12 season. In 14 games for the Red Wings he would record a goal and add six assists.
With the NHL locked out to start the 2012-13 season, Smith would once again join the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 32 games for the club he would impress and record 20 points. When NHL play resumed Smith would join the Red Wings. He would go on to appear in 34 games for the club and also suit up for all 14 of the Red Wings' playoff games.
On July 16, 2013, the Red Wings and Smith came to terms on a two year contract worth $2.525 million.
