Joakim Andersson was born February 5, 1989 in Munkedal, Sweden. A standout for Frölunda HC in his homeland, Andersson was selected in the third round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings.
Andersson made his North American debut for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League during the 2008-09 season, joining the club for a single game at the end of the regular season as well as for 10 playoff games. He would return to Sweden the following year.
2010-11 would be Andersson's first full North American campaign. He would appear in 79 games for Grand Rapids, recording seven goals and adding 15 assists.
Andersson was recalled from Grand Rapids by the Detroit Red Wings in February 2013.He would go on to appear in five games for the Red Wings during the 2011-12 season, registering a +1 rating.
