Tom McCollum was born on December 7, 1989 in Buffalo, New York. McCollum played his junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the Guelph Storm and the Brampton Battalion and was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
In 2009-10, McCollum's first professional season, the goaltender split time between the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
Injuries to Detroit Red Wings' goalies Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard created an opening for McCollum in March of 2011. He was summoned from Toledo to serve as the backup goaltender, but made his NHL debut on March 30, 2011, coming on to replace Joey MacDonald. McCollum would allow 3 goals and the Red Wings would go on to lose the game.
