Gustav Nyquist was born on September 1, 1989 in Halmstad, Sweden. Following two seasons in the J20 SuperElit in his native Sweden, Gustav joined the University of Maine Black Bears of the NCAA. Following his second collegiate he was named finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is presented annually to the NCAA's top player.
A draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings, Nyquist joined the club's AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, in the late stages of the 2010-11 season. He would score his first professional goal in his second AHL game against the Texas Stars on March 26, 2011.
Nyquist spent the majority of the 2011-12 season in the American Hockey League where he continued to put up impressive offensive numbers. In 56 games for Grand Rapids he registered 58 points. His production at the AHL level did not go unnoticed and Nyquist also appeared in 18 regular season game for Detroit where he recorded the first goal of his NHL career to go along with six assists.
