Mighty Ducks-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Anaheim Mighty Ducks (8-8-4-5) at Detroit Red Wings (14-9-2-0).

TIME: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

Sergei Fedorov will be making his return to Detroit with the team that knocked the Red Wings out of last season's playoffs when the Anaheim Mighty Ducks visit Joe Louis Arena.

Fedorov left the Red Wings as a free agent with three Stanley Cups and a Hart Trophy. The 33-year-old center will make his first visit to Detroit since signing a $40 million deal to join the Mighty Ducks.

"It probably will be overwhelming, so I'm probably going to have to calm myself down a bit before the game," Fedorov said. "There will be certain pressures, but I'll try not to lose my head and get caught up in all that other stuff besides hockey because I'll have to perform on the ice."

The Ducks embarrassed Fedorov and the Red Wings by sweeping them in the first round of last season's playoffs. Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere outplayed Detroit's Curtis Joseph as the Ducks prevailed by a single goal in each of the four games to send the defending Stanley Cup champions home early.

The Red Wings have fared well without Fedorov, winning three straight and four of five to move into a tie for first place in the Central Division with St. Louis.

Backup goalie Manny Legace stopped 30 shots and Steve Thomas had two goals to lift the Red Wings to a 6-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday.

Detroit has won seven of its last 10 despite being without key players like Derian Hatcher (knee surgery), Henrik Zetterberg (broken leg), Darren McCarty (bulging disc in his back), Dominik Hasek (groin), Ray Whitney (groin) and Tomas Holmstrom (separated shoulder).

The Mighty Ducks had an 11-game point streak snapped Tuesday as Vaclav Prospal scored with 31.9 seconds left for Anaheim's only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The defeat spoiled a good effort by backup goalie Martin Gerber, who stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced.

The Mighty Ducks are 0-7-2-2 when scoring fewer than two goals this season.
