Thrashers-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Atlanta Thrashers (19-16-3-1) at Detroit Red Wings (22-12-4-1).

TIME: Wednesday, 7 p.m. EST.

The highest-scoring teams in the NHL, even though they haven't looked like it lately, will square off when the Detroit Red Wings host the Atlanta Thrashers.

Detroit was the league's top scoring team in 2002-03 with 269 goals, and is the leader again this season with 126. Atlanta is second with 115.

The Red Wings, however, have been limited to four goals in their last four games. They're 1-2-1 and have been shut out twice during that span.

"I don't think we're shooting the puck at the right time," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said.

The Thrashers have been very streaky offensively, and could be in the midst of another scoring funk with just three goals in their last two games. Atlanta had scored 14 times in its previous three games following a stretch in which it was shut out in three straight losses.

A usually prolific power-play unit for Detroit has gone flat, going scoreless in 20 straight opportunities. The Red Wings were 0-for-6 on the power play in Sunday's 3-0 loss to Chicago.

"We didn't play well at all," Detroit's Brendan Shanahan said. "We were stupid. We made poor decisions. Our commitment to work and battle, (was) maybe the lowest it's been in any game this year."

Atlanta has scored a league-high 40 third-period goals, but failed to find the net in the final 20 minutes of Monday's 2-1 home loss to Montreal. The Thrashers outshot the Canadiens 13-7 in the final period.

Goaltender Byron Dafoe made 26 saves, but gave up two goals in a four-minute stretch at the end of the first period before stopping the Canadiens the rest of the way.

"Basically, four minutes cost us the game," Dafoe said. "I thought we played a lot better in the second and third."

Atlanta's offense, however, has had no success against Detroit.

The Red Wings have outscored the Thrashers 30-10 in winning all six meetings between the teams, including an 11-3 scoring edge in three matchups at Detroit.
