Red Wings-Hurricanes Preview

GAME: Detroit Red Wings (23-12-4-1) at Carolina Hurricanes (12-15-8-2).

TIME: Friday, 7 p.m. EST.

The best offensive team in the league takes on the worst as the Detroit Red Wings travel to RBC Center to play the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Red Wings lead the NHL with 132 goals this season, while the Hurricanes have scored just 67.

Detroit is coming in off a 6-5 win Wednesday over visiting Atlanta, the league's second-highest scoring team.

Henrik Zetterberg scored twice and had an assist, while Ray Whitney, Brendan Shanahan and Mathieu Schneider each added a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who improved to 8-2-1-1 in their last 12 games.

Shanahan's goal was the 549th of his career, moving him into 18th place on the NHL list, one ahead of Michel Goulet.

Brett Hull, the team's second-leading scorer with 39 points, added two assists on Wednesday. Hull has 24 goals in 34 career games against Carolina.

The Hurricanes have scored just 12 goals in their last nine games, and are 3-4-0-2 over that span.

Goals were at a premium again on Wednesday as Carolina played uninspired hockey in a 3-1 loss to visiting Anaheim. The Hurricanes had just 18 shots on goal.

"The point I'm trying to make with our team is we don't have the luxury of taking a breath," said coach Peter Laviolette, who is 4-3 since taking over for Paul Maurice.

"We've got to keep our foot on the gas and our focus on where we're going because nobody is going to give us anything."

For the third time this season the Hurricanes were denied their first three-game win streak.

"A three-game winning streak shouldn't be too much to ask for, but for some reason we haven't gotten it done," said right wing Erik Cole, who has gone 21 games without a goal, and nine without a point.

The loss was the first for Carolina on its current seven-game homestand following wins over Montreal and Buffalo.
