Coyotes-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Phoenix Coyotes (16-14-12-2) at Detroit Red Wings (27-13-4-2).

TIME: Friday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

Starting a six-game stretch against teams currently in a playoff spot, the Phoenix Coyotes meet the Detroit Red Wings hoping to end a three-game winless streak.

With losses in two straight since goalie Brian Boucher had his record shutout run end with a 1-1 tie against Atlanta, the Coyotes won't get a break in their schedule the rest of the month.

Besides games with the Western Conference-leading Red Wings on Friday and on Jan. 24, the Coyotes will have a home-and-home set with Pacific Division-leading San Jose, as well as games with Calgary and Ottawa, who are both currently in playoff position.

The Coyotes will end the month with a home game against Dallas, which is in a three-way tie with Phoenix and Los Angeles for eighth place in the Western Conference.

On Thursday, the Coyotes squandered a point in the standings by allowing a goal with 47 seconds left in a 4-3 loss to Nashville.

Sean Burke made 28 saves, and Daymond Langkow, Daniel Cleary and Brian Savage scored for Phoenix.

The Red Wings, meanwhile, have won five of seven despite getting little production from future Hall of Famer Brett Hull.

The 39-year-old winger hasn't scored in 17 games, the longest drought of his career. Hull, who has 16 goals and 26 assists this season and 732 career goals, has recorded 12 assists during his slide.

On Wednesday, Niklas Kronwall scored his first NHL goal and Manny Legace made 22 saves as the Red Wings topped the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2.

Detroit drafted Kronwall 29th overall in 2000.

"I don't know what I thought," Kronwall said about his goal. "I was just glad to see the puck go in the net. It felt great."

Jason Woolley, Ray Whitney and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored in the win.
