Red Wings-Sharks Preview

GAME: Detroit Red Wings (27-13-5-2) at San Jose Sharks (20-11-11-4).

TIME: Monday, 8 p.m. EST.

Steve Yzerman reached one milestone in the last game -- and has another one within reach.

Yzerman looks to tie Mario Lemieux for sixth on the all-time points list as the Detroit Red Wings visit the streaking San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion.

Yzerman assisted on a goal in Detroit's 3-3 tie with the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday, becoming just the seventh player in NHL history to reach 1,700 points.

"It's a nice number," he said. "But I don't know. I've played a long time, and things gradually add up over the years."

The assist also left Yzerman one point behind Lemieux, who is out for the season with a hip injury.

"It's a great honor just to be on the same team, and in the same locker room with him," said Henrik Zetterberg, who tied the game with 1:44 left in the third period. "He's been around for 21 years. I was 2 when he got here."

Yzerman, who has 672 goals and 1,028 assists in 1,418 regular-season games, has 12 goals and 18 assists this season.

Kris Draper and Chris Chelios also scored for Detroit, which is 5-1-1-1 in its last eight games.

Brett Hull failed to score in his 18th straight games, the longest drought of his career.

The Sharks are coming off Saturday's 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, giving them a 10-2-1-1 mark in their last 14 games.

Nils Ekman scored the game-winner 15 seconds into the final period, and Vesa Toskala stopped 32 shots for San Jose, whose two leading scorers, Patrick Marleau (ankle) and Marco Sturm (chest), were out with injuries.

"I don't think you should be standing here talking to me," Ekman said. "You should be talking to Vesa. It's his win. Bottom line, Vesa won the game for us."
