Oilers-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Edmonton Oilers (23-25-9-1) at Detroit Red Wings (32-16-8-2).

TIME: Monday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

With Curtis Joseph expected to miss at least another week with an ankle injury, the Detroit Red Wings will need a stronger effort from Manny Legace than they got on Saturday.

Legace will look to redeem himself when the Red Wings meet the Edmonton Oilers at Joe Louis Arena.

In Legace's first start since Joseph was placed on injured reserve, the Red Wings fell to Colorado 5-2 on Saturday, snapping a three-game winning streak.

Joseph was injured in Wednesday's 4-2 win over San Jose - the Wings' first game since Dominik Hasek announced his season was over because of a groin injury. Legace insists he can handle the goaltending duties until Joseph returns.

"It's nothing different," Legace said. "It doesn't matter if (Joseph) is on the bench or in the stands."

Although the score was tied at two after two periods Saturday, the Avalanche scored three times and outshot the Red Wings 14-9 in the final period.

"They really took it to us in the third," said Legace, who made 25 saves.

While Legace was disappointed with his performance, Detroit also struggled with special teams. The Red Wings had killed 14 straight penalties before allowing the Avalanche to score on two of six opportunities with an extra man.

The Oilers head to Detroit looking for their first win on a four-game road trip. Edmonton opened the swing with a 3-0 loss to Minnesota on Friday and then rallied for a 2-2 tie against Nashville on Sunday.

Ethan Moreau scored midway through the third period to help Edmonton earn the point.

"I thought it was a pretty good effort from two teams that are pretty desperate right now," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "We needed at least the point especially in light of the fact that we came back in the third period to get the tie."

The Oilers, however, lost two players in the tie. Radek Dvorak left with a groin injury, and Brad Isbister went out with an ankle injury. The status of both players is unknown.
