Flames-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Calgary Flames (36-26-7-3) at Detroit Red Wings (42-17-10-2).

TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

Brendan Shanahan is doing everything he can to help get the Detroit Red Wings the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Shanahan will look to follow up one of his best games of the season when the Red Wings meet another team in the thick of the playoff chase, the Calgary Flames.

Shanahan had a hat trick in Detroit's 3-2 win over Nashville on Sunday.

"It's great for him and great for the team," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. "Any time you have a hat trick, it's an exciting night."

On pace for his lowest statistical output since finishing with 28 goals and 29 assists in 1996-97, Shanahan has four goals and an assist in his last five games, and 23 goals and 25 assists for the season.

The Red Wings, who took over the top spot in the league with the victory and are three points clear of Colorado in the West, are unbeaten in eight (7-0-1) and have lost just twice in their last 20 (14-2-4).

Though the Red Wings are second overall in the NHL in goals scored, they have been just as good defensively, ranking third in goals allowed with 154.

Nashville's power-play goal in the first period was the first surrendered by Detroit in 10 games. The Red Wings, who lead the league in penalty-killing percentage, had killed 40 consecutive penalties.

The Flames have used a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) to move into the sixth spot in the West. Calgary, which has not made the playoffs since 1995-96 and has not won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup in 1988-89, is coming off a 3-0 win over St. Louis on Sunday.

Roman Turek made 25 saves for his 26th career shutout.

"This was a big game for me, so I was ready from the first minute," Turek said. "This was like a playoff game for us. A shutout is always a special game for a goalie."

Craig Conroy scored for Calgary, giving him eight points, including six assists, in his last four games.
