Red Wings-Sharks Preview

GAME: Detroit Red Wings (16-6-2) at San Jose Sharks (8-10-4).

TIME: Saturday, 10:30 p.m. EST.

The San Jose Sharks will again try to snap an eight-game losing streak when they meet the struggling Detroit Red Wings at the HP Pavilion.

The Sharks last lost nine in a row from Oct. 10-28, 1992 - their second season in the league.

San Jose had two 13-game losing streaks and a franchise-record 17-game skid en route to 71 losses that season, also a franchise record.

San Jose has won three in a row and four of five at home over Detroit.

The Sharks on Thursday lost 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks. Patrick Marleau and Marcel Goc scored for San Jose, which has scored more than two goals just once during their current losing streak.

Their latest loss was especially tough. Vancouver's Anson Carter was awarded the game-winner in the third period after the goal was reviewed. In the final minute of the game, Jonathan Cheechoo apparently scored for San Jose, but the goal was disallowed upon review.

Coach Ron Wilson, who said he didn't receive an explanation on the second review, vented his frustration before cutting his media availability short.

"That's a sad state of affairs when you can't communicate with head coach of a team," he said. "Come over and give me an explanation because he was wrong on that one. That cost us a point."

The Red Wings lost for the fifth time in six games on Friday, falling 3-1 to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Henrik Zetterberg scored the Red Wings.

Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom has not scored a goal in seven games. He has six goals in 15 games against the Sharks in San Jose.

The Red Wings have split two games since defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench in the first period of Monday's game against the Nashville Predators.

The game was postponed and rescheduled for April 16.

"You don't have to wait for something like this to happen to have perspective," Detroit's Brendan Shanahan said. "It's a reminder, but we're not going to try to turn it into a sports cliche."
