Red Wings-Blues Preview
Associated Press

GAME: Detroit Red Wings (56-15-8) at St. Louis Blues (21-44-14).

TIME: Saturday, 8 p.m. EDT.

The Detroit Red Wings look to extend their NHL-record road winning streak to 12 games as they visit the St. Louis Blues.

The Red Wings set the record Thursday in a 7-3 rout of Chicago. The 11 consecutive road wins bettered the old mark shared by New Jersey, Buffalo and St. Louis.

Detroit - which already clinched the Presidents' Trophy - also furthered a single-season NHL record with its 30th road win.

"We talked about being professional down the stretch and playing the teams that aren't going to make the playoffs," Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. "They're going to show up and work hard so we have to match that.

"We know we can't just throw a switch once the playoffs start," he added. "We have to play well going into the playoffs."

The Red Wings are 15-0-3 in their last 18 games, not losing in regulation since a 5-2 defeat March 7 to Phoenix. Brendan Shanahan, who had a hat trick against the Blackhawks, said the team reminds him of Detroit's 1996-97 squad that won the Stanley Cup.

"We're a good hockey team," he said. "Since I've been here, there are a lot of things I like about this team the best. In style I would say it's most similar to our team in '97 as far as having some grittier players sprinkled through our lineup."

The Red Wings' last road loss came Feb. 28, when they lost 5-1 at San Jose. Detroit, however, was missing four key players that had played in the gold medal game at the Olympics.

During their 11-game road winning streak, the Red Wings have outscored opponents 47-23. The Red Wings also have enjoyed success at St. Louis with nine wins, three ties and an overtime loss in their last 13 games there.

Detroit, which has won 15 of its last 18 overall against the Blues, has not lost in regulation at St. Louis since a 4-3 defeat Dec. 26, 1998.

While Detroit has picked up at least one point in every game for the last five weeks, St. Louis has just one win in its last 16 games.

The Blues have scored more than two goals just once in that span and lost 4-1 to Columbus on Thursday, their second straight defeat after snapping a 13-game losing streak Sunday by beating Edmonton.

"We did a good job with the forwards collapsing down low," right wing Lee Stempniak said. "But we're not going to win many games scoring one goal."

St. Louis has also struggled on the power play, scoring only five times in 58 opportunities over the last eight contests.

"We've got a lot of young kids that have to learn how to have a killer instinct when they have a chance on the net," Blues coach Mike Kitchen said.
