Flames-Red Wings Preview
Associated Press

The inconsistent Detroit Red Wings look for their season-high fourth win in a row and a chance to move back atop the Central Division when they meet the struggling Calgary Flames at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.

After scoring just one goal in each of three straight road losses from Oct. 18-21, the Red Wings have responded with three consecutive one-goal wins, including a 3-2 victory Saturday over St. Louis.

Tomas Holmstrom had two goals in the win over the Blues. One night earlier in a 4-3 victory over Dallas, he had two assists.

"For our part, it was nice to come in here and get a win after beating Dallas (Friday) night," said defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, a four-time Norris Trophy winner who leads the Red Wings with eight assists and 10 points.

Detroit starts play in second place in the Central, two points behind Nashville, which will play in Edmonton later on Wednesday.

After a slow start, center Pavel Datsyuk has found his scoring touch with two goals and four assists during a four-game points streak. Before the streak, he had just a goal and two assists on the season, all in a 9-2 rout of Phoenix on Oct. 11.

Goaltender Dominik Hasek, given the night off against the Blues, should be back in net for this game. The six-time Vezina Trophy winner has a 1.97 goals-against average, but is just 2-1-1 this season.

He has not played against Calgary since a 2-0 loss on Dec. 10, 2001 and is 7-5 with one tie, a 2.07 goals-against average and one shutout in his career against them.

The Flames (3-6-1) are trying to avoid their third loss in a row overall and fourth straight on the road. They lost to Washington 4-2 on Monday, dropping the final two games of a three-game homestand.

"We're really trying to establish the fact that we have to get the identity as a hard working team," first-year Calgary coach Jim Playfair said. "We have spent a lot of time talking about our identity and we haven't done the work required to re-establish it."

A season-long slump by reigning Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff has been another reason why Calgary has struggled

Kiprusoff had a career high 42 wins and NHL-best 10 shutouts last season, but is just 3-6-1 with 2.82 GAA so far and may get the night off. If so, Jamie McLennan would make his season debut - he was 2-4-0 with a 3.01 GAA in 17 games, including nine starts, with Florida last season.

Jarome Iginla scored his sixth goal of the season against the Capitals, and has four goals during his current three-game goal-scoring streak. Iginla has not scored a goal in four consecutive games since Nov. 7-14.

Calgary and Detroit split four games last season with each recording wins at home and on the road.
