Oilers-Red Wings Preview
Associated Press

The Detroit Red Wings haven't lost since a defeat to the Edmonton Oilers more than two weeks ago. They'll try to reverse the result of that loss and extend their winning streak to seven games when the teams meet again Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit capped a three-game losing skid with a 3-1 loss to Edmonton on Oct. 21, but has rebounded with a string of six consecutive victories. The Red Wings (9-4-1) are outscoring opponents 18-10 and outshooting them 197-127 during the run.

Detroit broke open a tie game with three second-period goals Saturday en route to a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets - the first victory by more than one goal during the winning streak.

Daniel Cleary scored his first two goals of the season, and Mikael Samuelsson had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who outshot Columbus 37-17.

"We controlled most of the game and we were rewarded," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, whose team had four winning streaks of six or more games last season.

Dominik Hasek made 16 saves in the win and improved to 6-3-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average this season. He is 6-5 with three ties and a 2.51 GAA in 16 career starts against the Oilers.

The Red Wings are 4-1-1 at home this season, and look to continue their dominance of Edmonton at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit is 18-2-2 with one tie in its last 23 regular-season home meetings versus the Oilers, while outscoring Edmonton 90-44.

The two teams also met in the first round of last season's Western Conference playoffs, which Edmonton won in six games. The Oilers (7-6-1) won six of their first eight games of 2006-07, but have now dropped three straight and five of their last six.

Petr Sykora scored his team-leading ninth goal with 4:30 remaining Tuesday to send the game into overtime, but Edmonton lost 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout.

"We played well tonight," said Oilers center Brad Winchester, who also scored in the loss. "We wanted to get off to a better start. We haven't done that the last couple of games and we did that (Tuesday) and played a solid game.

"We were able to pull together and kill off some important penalties in the third, so we're happy to come away with a point and try to build off of that."

The Oilers killed off all nine Montreal power-play opportunities Tuesday, but failed to capitalize on their own extra-man chances for the third straight game.

Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves, but fell to 6-5-1 with a 2.54 GAA this season. He has struggled in 18 career games against the Red Wings, going 4-10-1 with three ties and a 2.73 GAA.

After dropping the opener of their five-game road trip, the Oilers will try to improve on their dismal 1-4-1 road mark.
