Blues-Red Wings Preview
Associated Press

In the midst of their longest losing streak of the season, a game against the St. Louis Blues may be just what the Detroit Red Wings need.

The Red Wings look to continue their dominance of the Blues as the Central Division rivals meet Friday at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit (12-5-3) lost to Vancouver 4-3 in overtime Wednesday, matching a season high with a third consecutive defeat that has come on the heels of a nine-game winning streak. The Red Wings have not lost four straight games since Nov. 13-19, 2005.

They led the Canucks 3-1 after two periods, but were outshot 17-9 in the third period and allowed the game-tying goal with 12:37 left in regulation.

"We turned the puck over too much, took too many penalties, and it cost us," right wing Dan Cleary said. "We did it to ourselves, bottom line. No way we should lose that game. We gave up too many shots. That's just it."

Cleary, who scored his sixth goal in the loss, has netted all of his goals and added five assists in a season-high seven-game points streak.

Chris Chelios tied Phil Housley for most games played by an American-born player with 1,495 on Wednesday, and the 44-year-old defenseman will move into 11th place on the all-time list Friday. Chelios has recorded more career points (71) against the Blues (6-11-3) than any other team, tallying eight goals and 63 assists in 99 career games.

The Red Wings have outscored the Blues 16-7 during their current five-game winning streak over them, and have won 17 of the last 20 in the series.

Detroit won three of four at home against St. Louis last season, and is 18-4 with a tie at Joe Louis Arena versus the Blues since Dec. 31, 1997.

Starting goalie Dominik Hasek had the night off in the Detroit's 3-2 win Oct. 28 over the Blues, and has struggled against them lately.

Hasek is 0-2-1 with a 4.50 goals-against average in his last four games against St. Louis. Lifetime, he is 9-5 with four ties, a 2.49 GAA and one shutout against the Blues.

Although he gave up a season-high four goals at home Wednesday, the 41-year-old Hasek has been stellar overall at Joe Louis Arena this season, going 6-1-2 with a 1.65 GAA and two shutouts. He has not lost consecutive games at home this season.

St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout victory Wednesday over Columbus. Bill Guerin scored the only goal in the shootout, and Jamal Mayers had two goals - including the tying goal with 2:18 to play - and an assist.

"I'm happy to be able to chip in," Mayers said of his career-high three point game. "We got the win and we needed it."

Manny Legace made 29 saves and stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout to win for just the second time in his last eight games.

Legace, who played his last six seasons for Detroit and was a member of the 2002 Stanley Cup-winning team, stopped 22 shots in the October loss, his only career game against the Red Wings.

The Blues have the second-worst road record in the league at 2-7-1, and this game wraps up a season-high five-game road trip.
