Atlanta Thrashers 5, Detroit Red Wings 6 FINAL OT
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -- Henrik Zetterberg got the last chance in a back-and-forth game.

Zetterberg scored his second goal of the game 2:24 into overtime Wednesday night, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Zetterberg also added an assist, and Brendan Shanahan, Ray Whitney and Mathieu Schneider each had a goal and an assist. Tomas Holmstrom scored the other Red Wings goals, and Pavel Datsyuk and Brett Hull each had two assists.

"I guess you have the last scoring chance and something like that happens," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said.

Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists for Atlanta, which also got goals from Slava Kozlov, Ronald Petrovicky, Zdenek Blatny and Daniel Tjarnqvist.

"I don't think it was our best game," Thrashers coach Bob Hartley said. "But we kept coming back."

Zetterberg beat goaltender Pasi Nurminen with a high shot from the bottom of the left circle after taking a pass from Whitney on a two-on-one.

"I saw him (Whitney) with the puck, so I just tried to beat my guy," Zetterberg said. "I think he was tired. It was a great pass and I tried to shoot it as high as possible."

Atlanta tied it 5-5 with 7:02 remaining when Tjarnqvist's shot from the point deflected in off the stick of Datsyuk and the leg of Detroit defenseman Jiri Fischer in a seesaw period in which both teams scored twice.

"It was a strange night," Lewis said.

Each team scored three times in the second period. Detroit led 2-0 after the first 2:04.

Schneider shoveled in his own rebound 32 seconds in and Holmstrom put in his rebound just 1:32 later.

Kozlov put Atlanta on the board at 3:38 when he tipped in a shot by Patrik Stefan.

"Pretty exciting game," Kozlov said. "It was a big point for us to come back."

Whitney restored the Red Wings' two-goal lead at 8:31 when he fired in a one-timed shot from the slot.

But Petrovicky closed the gap to 3-2 with 8:53 remaining in the period when he put a shot past Joseph from the bottom of the right circle as he was being pulled down by defenseman Jason Woolley.

Blatny tied it at 3 with his first NHL goal with 4:14 left.

"It was not good that we let them be in the game again," Zetterberg said. "They had some lucky goals, I think. But they're dangerous, too."
