Boston Bruins 3, Detroit Red Wings 0 FINAL
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -- Andrew Raycroft had modest goals after the Detroit Red Wings swarmed his goal in the opening minutes.

"Survive," Raycroft said. "Get out of the first 10 minutes and not pass out."

He did a lot more than that, finishing with 36 saves for his second career shutout in the Boston Bruins' 3-0 victory over the Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Joe Thornton, Travis Green and Mike Knuble scored to help the Bruins snap Detroit's four-game winning streak and 12-game home unbeaten streak (11-0-1).

Thornton opened the scoring 6:35 left in the first period, skating in off the right wing and tucking the puck into the short side after a couple of moves on goalie Curtis Joseph.

It was the Bruins' second shot. They didn't get their first shot until 9:45 in, and were outshot 13-3 in the period.

Raycroft made successive big saves on Tomas Holmstrom midway through the first period, stopping a low one-timer and then a backhand shot headed for the top of the net.

"We had total control of the game the first period. Their goaltender was outstanding in the first period," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. "They capitalized on their one chance. The wrong guy got the chance."

Green made it 2-0 with 4:28 remaining in the second period when he tapped a weird carom off the backboards through Joseph's pads. Knuble scored 2:01 into the third period.

"We know we're not going to dominate for a full 60 minutes like we did in the first," Detroit's Kirk Maltby said. "But we didn't come out with the same spark or momentum that we had in the first."

Raycroft also stopped Henrik Zetterberg on a breakaway with 9:52 remaining.

"Andrew held us in there the first 10 minutes, I think he was a big factor in the win," Knuble said. "All night, but especially in the first 10 minutes. The game could have been, we could have been in a real hole there. He gave us a chance to win.

"The offense came through. We got kind of a lucky bounce on the second goal. Instead of sitting back in the third, we got another one. A conscious effort tonight to finish off the game."
