Detroit Red Wings 2, Dallas Stars 2 FINAL OT
Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) _ Richard Matvichuk thought he had given the game away. Then the Dallas Stars got a lucky bounce.

Teppo Numminen scored off a faceoff with 6:02 left in regulation, with the puck slipping past screened goalie Manny Legace, to give the Stars a 2-2 tie with Detroit on Monday night.

``I didn't see it,'' said Legace, starting in place of struggling Curtis Joseph. ``I had 500 guys in front of me. I heard it hit some shin pads. I looked down and it was right between my legs.''

Pierre Turgeon won the faceoff, and the puck went to Numminen along the boards near the blue line. Numminen pushed it into traffic toward the net.

Turgeon, who had gone straight to the net after the faceoff, helped Bill Guerin in creating traffic in front of Legace.

``Turgeon got a big faceoff and then we got a bounce. That's what we were looking for,'' Stars coach Dave Tippett said. ``We've battled through some demons, and we've become mentally stronger as a team.''

The Stars, who had won four of their previous five games, came from behind twice against the Central Division-leading Red Wings, who had outscored Dallas 10-2 in two previous games this season.

The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead with 16:49 left in the third when Tomas Holmstrom turned an errant Dallas pass into an unassisted goal.

The gift goal came courtesy of defenseman Richard Matvichuk, whose backhand pass from against the boards slid past Turgeon right onto Holmstrom's stick. Holmstrom made a quick move and slapped his eighth goal past Turco.

``I've been in this league too long to do something like that,'' said Matvichuk, who has played all 12 of his NHL seasons with the Stars. ``It was a stupid play. I put it right on his stick.''

Holmstrom made the most of his good fortune, getting All-Star Marty Turco in motion and sending the shot to the goalie's right into the net.

``I was pushing back a little bit and Matvichuk just coughed it up,'' Holmstrom said.

Legace finished with 27 saves. He stopped two hard power-play shots just before allowing the game-tying goal.

In overtime, Legace's stopped Stu Barnes' shot _ the only one Dallas got off in the extra five minutes.

Turco had 24 saves for Dallas, including five in overtime. He is 0-3-5 in his career against the Red Wings.

Detroit ended its five-game road trip 1-2-2. Dallas is 12-5-6 over its last 23 games to get back into the upper half of the Western Conference standings.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead when Pavel Datsyuk scored his 24th goal from the top of the left circle 7{ minutes into the game.

Turco had already stopped Brendan Shanahan's point-blank slap shot, and got a break when Henrik Zetterberg beat the goalie only for his shot to ricochet off the left post.

The Stars got even when Matvichuk's power-play shot from the blue line was redirected in front by David Oliver with 1:16 left in the first.

Oliver has three goals in the four games after not having NHL goal since playing with Phoenix in 1999-00. He has 46 career goals, 36 of them coming his first two seasons in Edmonton from 1994-96.

Joseph was 1-4-1 in his last six games. After giving up four goals in eight shots in a loss Saturday at Phoenix, Joseph was replaced in the third period by Legace, who stopped five of the shots he faced.

Goalie Dominik Hasek, whose return from retirement had pushed Joseph into a backup role, is expected to be re-evaluated Wednesday after being inactive for three weeks with a pulled groin.
