Carolina Hurricanes 4, Detroit Red Wings 4 FINAL OT
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) _ The Detroit Red Wings made up for two bad periods with an explosive third.

Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and an assist and Tomas Holmstrom also scored twice in the Red Wings' 4-4 tie with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

Down 4-1 after two periods, Detroit scored three times in the third to earn the tie.

``Two bad periods, but the third was good,'' Holmstrom said. ``We started to get the puck down low and more people going to the net.''

Radim Vrbata and Sean Hill each had a goal and an assist for Carolina, and Pavel Brendl and Rod Brind'Amour also scored.

Holmstrom scored from the bottom of the left circle on a one-time shot off a pass from Brendan Shanahan to tie it at 4 with 3:21 left in the third period.

Holmstrom started the comeback when he put in a rebound from the bottom of the left circle 9:51 into the third period. Zetterberg then batted a rebound out of the air on a power play for his second goal of the game with 5:34 remaining.

``The first two periods, we didn't play good enough,'' he said. ``Third period we played better and got some lucky bounces.''

Carolina led 3-0 after the first period on only eight shots.

Brendl opened the scoring 2:37 in when he beat Curtis Joseph with a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot. Vrbata made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 8:20 left in the period, putting another wrist shot past Joseph.

Brind'Amour completed the first-period scoring when he slid a backhand shot by Joseph after a couple of moves with 3:25 left. The play began on Detroit defenseman Jiri Fischer's turnover.

``In the first period, we went after them. We forechecked, we pinched. We took away their time and space and had success,'' said Carolina coach Peter Laviolette. ``Then we stopped playing. We started sitting back in the second period and it was a matter of time until they came back.''

Joseph was pulled and Manny Legace started the second period in goal for Detroit. Zetterberg's power-play goal got the Red Wings on the board 4:10 in, but Hill restored the Hurricanes' three-goal lead just 24 seconds later.
