Edmonton Oilers 1, Detroit Red Wings 2 FINAL
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) _ A lack of action in the second period left Manny Legace with a case of the chills.

Legace stopped 29 shots without facing one in the second, and Kris Draper and Mathieu Schneider each scored in the Red Wings' 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

After Edmonton peppered Legace with 17 shots in the first period, Detroit held the Oilers without a shot in the second. The last time the Red Wings kept an opponent without a shot in a period was Jan. 24, 1996, a 4-2 win over San Jose.

``I got freezing cold, actually,'' Legace said. ``I came in (to the locker room) between the second and third periods and I was shivering.''

The Oilers were frustrated by their inability to generate an attack.

``Obviously, we didn't create the offense we wanted,'' Edmonton defenseman Jason Smith said. ``A lot of times we got the puck across or to their blue line, but instead of getting it in we turned it over. We just didn't create any chances on their net. It's tough to score without any shots.''

Legace insisted there was a shot in the period.

``I had one shot, I don't know what they're doing upstairs,'' Legace said about the official scorers. ``I'll show it to you. I've got the tape.''

Jarret Stoll had Edmonton's goal and Tommy Salo made 24 saves.

Legace's biggest save came 9:41 into the first period when he made glove stop on Ales Hemsky's backhander from in close.

It appeared from replays that Legace's glove was over the goal line when he caught the puck. The play was reviewed, but ruled no goal.

``The camera said it was no goal,'' Legace said. ``I just dove across the net.''

Edmonton's Ryan Smyth wasn't happy with the ruling.

``They said it was inconclusive. I don't know how it could be inconclusive when his glove went into the net,'' he said. ``That's why they have video review and you can't argue with it.''

Draper scored a short-handed goal to put Detroit up in the first, beating Salo with a one-timer from the inside edge of the left circle after taking a pass from Kirk Maltby, who had stripped the puck from Eric Brewer.

``I just kind of got in a good shooting spot,'' Draper said. ``And was able to watch him (Maltby) do all the work and shoot it in.''

Schneider made it 2-0 with 6:41 remaining in the second period when he beat Salo high on the stick side from the slot.

Stoll scored a power-play goal with 5:43 remaining in the third period.
