St. Louis Blues 1, Detroit Red Wings 5 FINAL
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) _ All the Detroit Red Wings needed Friday night were their special teams and Henrik Zetterberg.

Zetterberg had two power-play goals and an assist in a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Ray Whitney had a goal and two assists, Kirk Maltby scored a short-handed goal and Darren McCarty got the other goal. Brett Hull added two assists for Detroit, which has won six of its last seven games.

``Our power play took away everything we could have achieved,'' said St. Louis coach Joel Quenneville. ``We gave up a short-handed goal, two power-play goals and all of them could have been prevented.''

Doug Weight scored for St. Louis, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Maltby's short-handed effort was the only goal of the first period.

With McCarty off for unsportsmanlike conduct, Maltby picked up a rebound of Steve Yzerman's shot in front of the net and slid a backhand shot past goaltender Reinhard Divis.

``I followed it up, the puck was just sitting there,'' said Maltby. ``Made a move and put it into the open net. Pretty much a garbage goal.''

But it set the tone for the game.

``The short-handed goal changed the momentum we had built from three games before,'' said Divis.

Zetterberg scored both his goals in the second period, tipping pucks into the open side of the net.

``It was two easy tap-ins. Two great plays by Whitney,'' said Zetterberg. ``On the second one, I just had my weight on my sick and it hit it and went in.''

Zetterberg has four goals and eight assists in his last nine games.

``I think on the same line (with Brendan Shanahan and Tomas Holmstrom), that's a big key,'' he said.

Weight's goal was sandwiched between Zetterberg's pair. Weight tipped a pass from Keith Tkachuk past goalie Manny Legace from the slot.

McCarty got his third-period goal when he one-timed a shot from the slot after a pass from Steve Thomas.

``It was a good game, a game we really needed to win,'' said McCarty. ``We played hard and Manny made some great saves.''

Whitney scored with 3:52 remaining.

``It's tough to play in this building,'' said St. Louis defenseman Eric Weinrich. ``I've played on a lot of teams and it's been tough every time.''
