Calgary Flames 4, Detroit Red Wings 1 FINAL
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) _ The Calgary Flames are making a habit of beating the NHL's best teams.

Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves, and Calgary got goals from four players in a 4-1 win over the Red Wings on Tuesday night. That stretched the Flames' unbeaten streak to six games.

The Flames also have beaten two of the NHL's other top teams, Ottawa and Colorado, in their 4-0-2 stretch. Stephane Yelle, Steve Montador, Matthew Lombardi and Craig Conroy were Calgary's scorers.

``Any team right now will do,'' Yelle said. ``We're approaching it game by game.''

Calgary hasn't made the playoffs since the 1996-97 season. It is sixth in the Western Conference with 84 points. The top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs.

``I thought having as a good finish to the road trip, we could come in here and play well,'' Montador said of the swing that also took the Flames to Nashville and St. Louis. ``The way that we know that we can and play defensively, it would be a good win. A nice thrust for us to get in the playoffs''

Kirk Maltby had a goal for the Red Wings, whose eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) snapped. The Red Wings lead Colorado by three points in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference.

Detroit defenseman Derian Hatcher left the game early in the third period with a shoulder injury after a collision with Calgary's Chris Simon behind the Red Wing net.

``He's going to have it tested and evaluated tomorrow,'' Detroit coach Dave Lewis said.

Hatcher was playing in only his fourth game after missing 64 with an ACL tear, sustained in the third game of the season. He was signed as a free agent from the Dallas Stars during the offseason.

Hatcher didn't speak to the media.

Calgary scored on its only shot of the first period when Jordan Leopold's pass in front of the net went in off Yelle's skate.

``I thought the first one was kicked in,'' Red Wings goaltender Manny Legace said.

Detroit had 10 shots in the period.

``It wasn't our best first period today, but we focused back and got back to our system,'' Yelle said. ``In the second, we played much better.''

Calgary stretched its lead to 3-0 in a 24-second span early in the second period.

Montador's screened wrist shot from the blue line eluded Legace at 2:55. Lombardi scored at 3:19 when he tipped in a pass from Chuck Kobasew, who had beaten Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman along the right wing boards.

``They came out flat, and we took advantage of it,'' Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. ``That two shifts in the second period changed the game.''

Maltby scored with 4:10 left in the period when he beat Kiprusoff from the top of the left circle.

But Conroy restored Calgary's three-goal lead with 43 seconds remaining in the middle period when he put in a cross-crease pass to finish off a two-on one.
